Overview
I have always enjoyed drawing, and would sketch in my free time for relaxation and enjoyment. In 2023 I decided to take some illustration courses at the Denver Botanic Gardens to enrich my skills. I really enjoyed this process, so much so that this was a part of the inception into my decision to commit to moving forward with a career in design. I followed this up with art and drawing courses during my time at the Community College of Denver.
Process
Learning to become a better illustrator helped my brain to visualize how to create from more simple and basic elements. It helped me to understand the space in a piece of work or design and how that space impacts that work, as well as the importance of framing. It helped me to more accurately understand and create depth in a piece of work. All of these courses had a foundation in the elements of art and principles of design which help to inform how a piece is created and what it is trying to communicate.
Insights
My practice in illustration has only given me more freedom and skills in the fields of web and graphic design. Being able to create an asset from scratch that I want to use for a design or website is incredibly helpful in curating the feeling and style that I want for whatever piece of work I'm creating.
