postmodern style poster

Overview

This brief, to create a post modern style poster, was delivered for a typography course. I was tasked with creating a poster for a fictional museum event in post modern styling. This was part of a poster series in which we were challenged to design in historically iconic styles that are still very relevant today.

Process

I started this process by brainstorming ideas for an art exhibition. My background is in science, and I also experience in illustration. I decided to meld those two interests and create an event for scientific illustrations at a museum located in Santa Cruz, CA. I spent some time researching post modern style posters and other post modern design work to get a feel for what design qualities would bring forward this aesthetic. I also researched where I could find entirely free imagery of scientific illustrations to utilize in the design. I did some sketches for layouts and content, but mostly let the imagery I found and sampled lead the creative process for this piece of work. I worked in Photoshop and Illustrator to design this poster.

Insights

Designing in the post modern style felt freeing in a way. I found myself straying from my regular process to see what could come together naturally based on the imagery that I had found and sampled. Going through this process helped me to appreciate that not only can you not always follow a process, but that it can be beneficial to break free of that mold as you create. This gives you the potential to arrive with a more unique and interesting final product than you may have created with a more guiding structure.
